Susan Brown never imagined that one day she would be fighting simply to survive.

When I first met Susan, she was living on the streets outside a grocery store, exposed to the heat, the rain, and the uncertainty of each new day. But homelessness was not her only battle. While struggling to survive, Susan was also fighting kidney cancer and carrying the heartbreaking grief of losing her husband not long before.

Over time, I began checking on her regularly, bringing water, food, and basic first-aid supplies. One day, I found Susan barely responsive. The heat was unbearable. She was slumped over in her chair, drenched in sweat, severely dehydrated, and on the verge of collapse. At that moment, it became painfully clear that without help, her situation could become life-threatening.

With Susan’s permission, the SFJ Foundation began sharing her story and seeking support on her behalf. What happened next was truly remarkable. Kind-hearted people from all walks of life chose to help someone who had been overwhelmed by circumstances beyond her control.

Thanks to these generous donations, Susan was able to leave the streets and move into a safe place to stay. For the first time in a long time, she had a bed to sleep in, regular meals, and the chance to focus on her health. She was able to attend all of her chemotherapy appointments and has now been granted a six-month break from treatment.

But her journey is far from over.

The costs of housing, food, transportation, medications, and ongoing medical care continue to place a heavy burden on her daily life. Susan still relies on the kindness and compassion of others to keep moving forward.

Our greatest hope is to give Susan something many people take for granted—a permanent place to call home. A safe place where she can rest, recover, and live with dignity, stability, and peace of mind.

Susan is currently working with a social worker to secure disability benefits, but that process takes time. Until then, she continues to depend on the support of people who believe that no one should have to face cancer without shelter, support, or hope.
